  1. The picture of Henry Berry Lowry (Lowery/Lowrie) used in this Family Tree isn’t him (according to his great great great grandson Dr. Dean Chavers). Unfortunately the picture of Quinny Irvin Godwin has been mistakenly used as HBL for over 35 years. Just thought I would let you know. It is literally everywhere, so the likelihood of it being corrected is slim. Here is a message from Dr. Chavers on another blog/family history page: “Your photo of Henry Berry Lowery is actually Quinn Godwin. It got taken from Quinn’s grandson’s house under mysterious circumstances 35 years ago and published as HBL. It is unfortunate that it happened, and that you and many others were duped. Would you take it off your website? Quinn was my great-great-grandfather. See my books “Modern American Indian Leaders” and “Racism in Indian Country.”…” Here is his wiki bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Chavers

    1. Thanks for the heads up . The photo is sourced from HBL descendants, one of whom has written books about him and used the image. Let me check with them.

    2. Many inaccurately claim the photo to be Quinn Godwin and that it was borrowed in 1975 to be used in an LRDA brochure as HBL. This is also the same year that Adolf Dial used the photo as HBL in his book “The Only Land I Know”.

However, the problem with the theory of the photo being Quinn Godwin is that my 2nd great grandfather, Clarence Edward Lowery (the son of Danny Leach Lowery (1886-1972) who was raised by his grandmother Rhoda Strong Lowry) had long published the photo in his book “The Lumbee Indians of North Carolina” in 1960.

This photo that is largely associated with Henry Berry Lowry came from my 4th great grandma Nelia Ann “Polly” Lowery (1871-1962), the daughter of Henry Berry Lowry. She gave it to her grandson and my 2nd great grandfather Clarence Lowery and he used it in his book, which was the first publication to feature the photo. It was this same photo Nelia Ann “Polly” Lowery showed her children and grandchildren as they were coming up and told them it was their grandfather.

This nearly two decades before the photo was said to be supposedly taken to be used in a brochure. So it directly conflicts with the claim that someone took the photo of “Quinn Godwin” in the late 70s and started using it as HBL due to the fact that the photo in question had long been identified as HBL, as well as being already published and readily available nearly two decades earlier.

        1. I would love to talk to you about the Lumbee people who are also my ancestors, my great grandmother was a Oxendine, I’ve been researching them for 12 years would love to compare notes my name is Herman Goodman phone number 352 234 0281

      1. Kelvin, this is interesting. Do you know why someone would confuse the photo? Quinny Godwin is my 4x great grandfather. I am trying to figure out if they were related or maybe knew each other? How else would the 2 families confuse the photo?

  2. I am a member of the Cumbo (Cumbee) family from McClellanville, Berkeley County, SC
–St. Thomas Parish, Berkeley County, SC
–St. Denis & St. Thomas Parish, Charleston County, SC
I am researching records for Elias Cumbee (b. about 1811; d. 1870) who lived in this area. His grandmother was Susan Cumbo (husband-Solomon Cumbo). She was given a land grant for plantation-lands in St. Thomas Parish (Hell Hole Swamp area). The plantation-estate was called Northampton. They also had a daughter (Susan Cumbo who married Hiram Hodge). Are we connected?

    1. Barbara, Pleasure to connect with you. We are likely distantly connected. Learning more about Solomon’s ancestry will help us better understand our possible connection. Your research on ELias and the Northampton plantation sounds fascinating. Please keep me posted! Best, Andre

    2. Barbara, I am not sure if you are monitoring this, but I figured I’d reply. I too am a descendant of the Cumbo/Cumbee line from McClellanville. My 2G-Grandmother was Julia Addie Cumbee, daughter of Pinckney Cumbee who was the son of Elias Cumbee and Sarah Sutcliff. I’d love to connect and see if/where our lines cross.

  3. Hi, my name is Mike Cumber. I don’t much about my family history. Just wondering if you know anything about my folks. My grandmother’s name was Rachel. We are from the Rockingham NC area.

    1. Michael,
Pleasure to meet you. I have some Cumber branches in my tree. What is the name of your Cumber father and grandfather. When and where were they born? What were the names of their wives? That should be enough to get me started.
      Thanks,
      Andre

  4. Hello,
I’m actually searching for help identifying where in the tree I fall. My father was born out of wedlock, and it seems his father’s DNA is the link to the Cumbee line. However, I don’t know exactly how. With a bit of help, I’ve been able to narrow it down to a descendant of Sarah Lorene Cumbee and Edward Arthur White (Charleston, SC). I’m unable to find information on descendants of theirs that stayed in the area. Can you help me with names?
    Thanks,
    Jessica

  5. Hello
I’m doing a little history taking about my family and I was told by grandma about my great-great grandmother. Her name was Martha Rebecca Reid(Cumbo) and she married a man named , Therman Ray Reid. Her Fathers name was William Britton “shine” Cumbo.

  6. Sad that this page was hijacked. I would love to hear from others actively researching the Cumbee family. Looking for the family of Honor Cumbee Walker born circa 1809 in South Carolina (possibly North Carolina). In researching a friend’s family, I found major parallels between my Mozingo and the Cumbo ancestry. I have also found association with the Chavis, Gibson, Hutto, and Driggers families. Has anyone done extensive research into how these families became so closely associated with each other? Also, has there ever been a connection between the Mozingos and the Cumbos?
